Artist Statement:

‘Kirsty Hulm works in such a diverse array of media and exhibition formats, responding to spaces, influences and cultures with a fluidity which can make it hard to describe the full breadth of her practice. Her work is simultaneously confronting and gentle, dealing with subject matter that is often deeply personal yet universal in its appeal. Formats for exhibition have included drawing, sculpture, neon, written word, tattoo, installation, letter writing, lists and self-deprecating comic works.
Music and literature play a key part in forming the narrative thread of her practice, and her work often cites a vast array of influences and figures, becoming homage to her own self reflexive referencing, and acknowledgement of the artist’s almost parasitic need to re-present the past.
In particular, her work in the field of writing is challenging and confronting, combining and fracturing fiction, art, social and psychoanalytic theory, allegory and Derrida’s concept of ‘sous rature,’ to imitate the layering of information in the mind.
Employing methods to camouflage and expose the ego, Hulm’s work is challenging and revealing whilst maintaining a lyrical and playful nature. Hulm has been featured in past exhibitions at the Monash Museum of Art, Perth Institute of Contemporary Art, O Projects, Penthouse Mouse Guerrilla Sites, Next Wave Festival Venues, and is upcoming at Criterion Gallery, Cast Gallery and in Un Magazine.’
